[WINii] When Layoff Turns to Relief

Plus, why some people might be immune to burnout

Hi WINers!

Burnout is real. I’ve personally gone through several. To be honest, I’m still not sure if I’m currently burying my head in the sand in this tech job market, or if I’ve actually gotten better at dealing with them.

In this newsletter, come on a journey with Amanda who went through 2 severe burnouts - to the point she felt relief after getting laid off.

We’ll also share topics from our recent WINii’s Money Meetup (what do other women in tech have on top of mind right now?), and how we might become immune to burnouts.

Let's do it! 👇

💰 WINii Money Meetup Recap

We had a candid conversation with a small group of women in tech in our recent WINii’s Money Meetup! 🚀

  • We took a poll on how we reacted as investors to the recent stock market volatility. Overall, WINers stayed calm and steady, continuing to contribute as planned despite market changes. Some folks actually took advantage of the downmarket to invest a bit extra.

  • We had an in-depth discussion about the anxiety surrounding today's uncertain tech job market. We debated whether it's the right time to seek new opportunities or if staying put and adopting a conservative approach is wiser for our careers.

  • Some WINers also mentioned that given their specialized roles, there are limited job prospects outside big tech that can match compensation. We discussed strategies for networking, broadening our skill sets to become more of a generalist, and the challenges of internal transfers in the current hiring freeze climate.

Overall, it was a great open conversation - amazing to catch up with fellow WINers! 🥳

Hope to see you in the next WINii’s Money Meetup!

😅 From Burnout to Relief

Amanda Handy is one of the most infectiously vivacious co-workers I've had the privilege of working with. However, much to my surprise, one topic in our recent episode of WINii’s MoneyBites was around her experience of burnout while working in tech.

Having gone through several burnouts myself, in an odd way, it was heartening to commiserate and empathize with Amanda. I was also very much inspired by her resilience and proactive approach to integrate the lessons learned from her burnout into her life and future career endeavors.

Amanda shared openly, including feeling a wave of relief after getting caught up in a mass lay off. As a strange silver lining, being laid off meant she had time to heal after feeling burned out for too long. She also shared how she navigated her career through different industries, and how she's made friends as an adult through Bumble BFF!

🔥 Immune to the Burn

Ever wonder why some people experience burnout and others don't? According to research, some lucky folks might build immunity to it! 😱

In the book Burnout Immunity by Kandi Wiens, Ed.D, researchers discovered that many of those immune to burnout also had a high degree of emotional intelligence (EI). These people tapped into their EI skills, like clear perception and effective management of emotions, to push through tough times.

If you're not one of the lucky ones, there's still hope. With practice, you can work to build your own EI skills to boost your burnout immune system! Burnout Immunity has plenty of tips on how to build self-awareness, regulate thoughts and emotions, and more.
